Halloween is without a concealment of a doubt one of, if not the best, horror films of all together. John Carpenter was at the peak of his powers in the recently 70's to early 80's and he knew perfectly how to terrify his audiences. Mainly through a parathesis of tension, suspense and keeping the puss of his killer, Michael Myers, obscured from camera. Unlike Freddy or Jason who were up front and hub in their respective series, at least when it was their turn to be on camera, Myers lurked in the shadows. Always there, always watching and waiting for the characters to be at their weakest and most exposed. It's the refinement of Myers slow build up that makes him so spooky. And Carpenter's approach is to throw up misleading jumps and upset building sightings from a distance before getting into the comestibles of his horror story. He's a master at industry. Two of my five favourite horror films ( The Fetich being the other) come from John Carpenter. He exceedingly was quite awesome until the 1990's rolled orbit
